Coastal GasLink (CGL) was granted an Environmental Assessment Certificate (EAC) on October 24, 2014 following an extensive multi-year review of the environmental, social, economic, heritage and health components of the project. This EAC was granted for a five-year duration, which can be extended once for an additional five years.
LNG Canada made a positive Final Investment Decision on October 1, 2018 which triggered the commencement of construction of both their LNG facility in Kitimat, B.C. as well as the CGL project.
Construction of the CGL project is well underway, with clearing and site preparation along with establishment of workforce accommodation at sites along the permitted right-of-way. This work is being done in anticipation of mainline construction in 2020 with the projected in-service of the pipeline in 2023, as previously announced by TC Energy. CGL has applied for a normal course five-year extension to complete construction now underway.
CGL remains engaged with its partners and has notified local and Indigenous communities of the extension application, which is in review by the Environmental Assessment Office. As well, CGL confirmed that the project scope remains the same as outlined in its original 7,200-page application.
