LNG 101
The more you know about liquefied natural gas (LNG), the more Coastal GasLink makes sense. LNG can play an important role in helping to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
What is LNG?
LNG stands for liquefied natural gas. The natural gas that will flow through Coastal GasLink will be prepared for export when it reaches our customer’s facility. LNG Canada will chill the natural gas to approximately -162 Celsius, transforming it into a liquid. LNG takes up 1/600 of its original volume, making it ideal for export. It is also non-explosive, non-toxic and non-corrosive.
What is natural gas?
Natural gas is one of the world’s cleanest and safest energy sources. It’s often used to heat our homes and operate household appliances and make crop fertilizer, fabrics, plastics and other everyday products.
Why are we selling fossil fuels when the world is experiencing a climate change crisis?
Natural gas is the cleanest burning fossil fuel. By making it available to global markets, it may replace other energy forms such as coal-fired electricity. That’s why natural gas is considered an ideal transition fuel as our society moves towards less carbon-intensive energy sources.
Why do we need another pipeline?
B.C. has an abundance of natural gas resources. Finding new global markets for B.C. natural gas will ensure continued economic opportunity for the province and its northern communities. The Douglas Channel near Kitimat, B.C., provides a suitable coastal port for the export of liquefied natural gas to global markets, but accessing that port requires the construction of a new pipeline to transport the natural gas from northeast B.C.
