Coastal GasLink finds an innovative way to take the facts, and shots, straight to those who want them

Posted by Coastal GasLink

Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Coastal GasLink has committed to find innovative ways to continue to make connections and meet people safely where convenient for them; Coastal GasLink’s Health & Safety team took this commitment to heart with the development of its mobile vaccination delivery program.

With vaccinations being one of the most effective ways to protect us from the impacts of COVID-19, Coastal GasLink went above and beyond to make access to vaccinations, and important information about them, convenient and safe for our workers.

The pandemic has, and continues to challenge us, in ways no one could have predicted. Sifting through the mountain of information related to COVID-19 and the safety of vaccinations can be daunting. In response, an idea was struck by Coastal GasLink and its Prime Contractors to take the facts directly to the workforce with a Mobile Vaccination Unit (MVU).

For Laura, she feels like the MVU program is making a difference. “Any hospitalization that I can prevent even if it just by one vaccine, it’s a win,” says Laura.

“We recognized that perhaps ease of access and education were barriers to people making a decision to get vaccinated,” say Mike Gibb, Director, Health, Safety and Security. “With that in mind, we came up with a unique program to take the facts, and the shots, straight to those who wanted to get them.”

Our MVU kicked off last Fall and was successful in increasing vaccinations amongst the workforce and giving them direct access to medical experts who could address any lingering concerns about vaccines and COVID-19.

With the arrival of the Omicron variant, we are kicking off another ‘tour’ in the coming weeks, and will have clinics throughout the year to make sure any workers who want a vaccine, or booster can get it on site. And we are thrilled to welcome back Laura Starck, a registered nurse with International SOS, who connected with hundreds of workers out on the front line through the MVU Program last year.

While helping to deliver vaccines and engaging with the workforce, Laura feels like part of the team. “There is a higher sense of community and they really do care about health and safety out there and keeping their own families safe back at home as well.”

With folks like Laura leading the way, we will continue to place the health and safety of our workers, their families and local communities as our number one priority. As the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve, we remain committed to working with our health and safety teams and medical experts to evaluate our plans for effectiveness and implement improvements, as necessary.
