Working together to keep communities safe

While safety starts on the job site, it does not end there – we want to make sure it extends out into the communities where we work and live.  

Over the past few summers, B.C. has faced devastating wildfires that have threatened the safety and quality of life of British Columbians. And so, we have made a commitment to find ways to work together with local communities along the project route to be prepared in the unfortunate event of a wildfire.

Coastal GasLink has put this commitment into action by funding critical training programs and facilities that are helping local communities get the training and equipment they need to fight local wildfires.

This year, Coastal GasLink was proud to be part of a multi-group effort that saw a new training facility built in the Fraser Lake area. Known as a ‘burn building’, the new facility will allow local fire departments in the region to learn the skills required to fight a number of different types of fires, including forest fires.

The facility is made possible by contributions from many incredible Indigenous and community partners including the Nadleh Whut’en and Stellat’en First Nations, the Nechako-Kitimat Development fund and the Four Rivers Co-op, among others.

“Safety is absolutely our number one priority, and we’re proud to partner with communities who share our commitment to safety,” explained Kiel Giddens, Coastal GasLink’s Public Affairs Manager, of the partnership. Speaking to the importance of the facility, Kiel added that “first responders need to be trained to the latest standards, and have the skills and tools to keep their communities safe, and this project will allow them to get excellent experience and training right in Fraser Lake.”

We take pride in helping to share our values of safety with communities along the Coastal GasLink Project route. Whether it’s partnering with community groups, supporting local initiatives or encouraging our employees to get involved in local initiatives, our goal is to build safely and leave a positive legacy for generations to come.
